인간의 후회는 마음의 변화를 의미하고 하나님의 후회는 환경과 관계의 변화를 의미한다.

하나님의 후회는 인간의 후회와 같지 아니하다. “이스라엘의 지존자는 거짓이나 변개함이 없으시니
그는 사람이 아니시므로 결코 변개치 않으심이니이다”(삼상 15:29). 인간의 후회는 마음의 변화를 의미하고 하나님의 후회는
환경과 관계의 변화를 의미한다. 인간은 하나님의 은총을 받을 수 있는 조건에 응함으로써 하나님께 대한 자신의 관계를 변화시킬 수도
있고, 또 자신의 행위로써 자기 자신을 은총을 받을 수 없는 곳에 둘 수도 있다. 그러나 여호와께서는 “어제나 오늘이나
영원토록”(히 13:8) 동일하시다. 사울이 불순종함으로 인하여 하나님과의 관계를 스스로 끊었으나 하나님께 가납하심을 받는 조건은
변치 않았고 하나님의 요구는 여전히 동일했다. 이는 하나님은 “변함도 없으시고 회전하는 그림자도 없으신”(약 1:17)

Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he
should repent.” Man's repentance implies a change of mind. God's
repentance implies a change of circumstances and relations. Man may
change his relation to God by complying with the conditions upon which
he may be brought into the divine favor, or he may, by his own action,
place himself outside the favoring condition; but the Lord is the same
“yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).
Saul's disobedience changed his relation to God; but the conditions of
acceptance with God were unaltered—God's requirements were still the
same, for with Him there “is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”
